How Skin Brightening Works

Skin brightening creams work by bleaching and lightening the skin. These products target skin inflammation which can occur after a traumatic skin condition like an acne breakout or after a sunburn.

The skin responds by causing inflammation which results in an over-production of melanin. This excess melanin causes hyperpigmentation which is what gives us those dark and discolored spots on our skin. These spots usually develop after the specific skin condition has resolved such as when a case of acne clears up or after a wound heals.

Essentially, skin brightening products work by reducing the amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is what protects us from the sun’s harmful UV rays and acts as the body’s natural sunscreen.

When you apply a skin brightening product, it goes to work on the affected area by reducing the amount of excess melanin. By reducing the amount of melanin, your skin can have a more evenly distributed complexion.

Avoid Sunlight

It’s highly advisable to avoid sunlight as much as possible whenever you use a skin brightening product. Since skin brightening creams reduce your skin’s melanin, it becomes more vulnerable to the sun’s UV rays. The sun’s UV rays can cause sunburns, wrinkles, spots, and even skin cancer.

In addition, if you expose yourself to sunlight, you end up reversing the effectiveness of the skin brightening product and increase the risk of re-damaging the area of the skin that you’re trying to treat. Less melanin on the skin means that your skin has less protection against the sun.

Warmer months such as spring and summer are the least ideal times to use skin brightening products because these are the months when we spend more time outdoors. It’s also the time when the sun’s UV rays are the most powerful and we’re at greater risk of sustaining sun damage.

That’s not to say that we’re not at risk of sun damage during the winter. However, cooler and shorter days mean that we spend less time outdoors and more time indoors, making the winter months the ideal time to correct your dark spots with skin brightening products.

However, always be sure that you’re taking the necessary precautions against the sun all year round. Regardless of the time of year, if you plan to spend a considerable amount of time outdoors, always be sure that you’re applying an SPF moisturizer in order to keep yourself protected from the sun.

Consider your individual circumstance as well, such as the location where you live. If you live in a region where the climate is usually sunny and warm, even during the winter months, you should be making sure that you’re following the instructions on your skin brightening product and avoid using it if you know you’re going to be outdoors for a considerable amount of time. If you live in a region where winters have cooler and darker days, then you may have more liberty in being able to use your brightening product outdoors. But be aware that even during cloudy days, the sun’s UV rays can still penetrate the layers of the skin.
